MESSAGE FROM NT ACTING REGIONAL DIRECTOR
NEW NT OFFICE OFFICIALLY OPENED
Welcome to the last issue of Inform NT for 2009.
The Australian Statistician, Brian Pink, officially opened the new ABS NT Office on Harry Chan Avenue on 2 October 2009. Mr Pink noted the important role that this Office plays in supporting the ABS in building a rich statistical picture of the Territory, through community and government collaboration. Thank you to all of you who came along to help us celebrate.
In late October I attended the 2011 Census Northern Australia Enumeration Strategy Working Group meeting in Brisbane. The Group comprises stakeholders from Australian, State/Territory and local governments with NT represented by NT Treasury, the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre and the Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation. At the meeting we finalised the terms of reference for the Working Group and discussed the draft 2011 Census Indigenous Enumeration Strategy and plans for the 2010 urban testing. Early in 2010 I am looking forward to meeting with the CEOs of our Local Government Councils and Shires to discuss the plans for the 2011 Census and the services that we might provide to them.
The NT Office hosted two Data Quality Assessment Workshops for Australian and NT Government agencies in November. These workshops demonstrated how the Data Quality Framework, which is being used by the COAG Reform Council to analyse and report on performance indicators for the COAG National Agreements, can be used to define the quality of a data item or collection of data items, assess data in the context of a data need, and areas for future improvement. I was pleased to see such a high level of interest with about 60 people participating in the workshops.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Tom Joseph
