CLASSIFICATION AND CODING

THE CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA

Relevant categories from the Level of Education component of the Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED) are used when collecting, aggregating and disseminating data relating to the variable 'Highest year of school completed'.

This section provides an overview of the coding procedures for the variable. For further details on the classification, code structure and coding procedures, refer to the 'Education Standard Variables Guide’ or the Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED) (cat. no. 1272.0) on the ABS website.

THE STANDARD CLASSIFICATION

The Level of Education component of the Australian Standard Classification of Education has a three level hierarchical structure. The detailed-level categories of the classification are aggregated to form the second level categories of the classification which comprise 15 Narrow Levels of Education. These in turn are aggregated to form nine Broad Levels of Education.

THE CODE STRUCTURE

Only categories of Broad Levels 6, 7 and 8 of the ASCED level of education classification are applicable to this variable.

SCOPE OF THE VARIABLE

The variable 'Highest year of school completed' applies to all persons.
