PRINCIPAL FEDERAL OFFENCE

Over one-quarter (29%) of defendants finalised for All Courts had a principal federal offence of Offences against justice, followed by Fraud and deception (20%) and Abduction and harassment (18%). Of defendants finalised with a principal federal offence of Offences against justice, most were classified to the ANZSOC Group of Offences against government operations, n.e.c. (76% of all defendants for the ANZSOC Division). This ANZSOC Group includes offences such as failure to complete the census form, failure to lodge taxation forms, failure to vote, hoax calls to emergency services and postal offences.

Of the defendants heard in the Higher Courts, just under three-quarters had a principal federal offence in the following three ANZSOC Divisions: Sexual assault (26%), Illicit drug offences (26%) and Offences against justice (22%).

For the Magistrates' Courts, over two-thirds had a principal federal offence in the following three ANZSOC Divisions: Offences against justice (30%), Fraud and deception (21%) and Abduction and harassment (19%).

Under three-quarters of defendants in the Children's Courts had a principal federal offence in the following three ANZSOC Divisions: Abduction and harassment (47%), Offences against justice (14%) and Theft (9%).
