GROUP 22 - PERFORMING ARTS Group 22 Performing arts consists of units mainly engaged in the production of various arts performances including music, drama, dance and music theatre. Group 22 also includes the operation of performing arts venues. It consists of the following classes:
222 Drama; 223 Dance; 224 Music theatre and opera; 225 Other performing arts; and 226 Performing arts venues. 221 MUSIC PERFORMANCE Definition This class consists of units mainly engaged in performing vocal and/or instrumental music. Performance for the purpose of recording or for later broadcast is included.
Units mainly engaged in: (a) dance performance are included in Class 223 Dance; (b) opera or music theatre performance are included in Class 224 Music theatre and opera; (c) composing or other primary creation of music are included in Class 231 Music composition; and (d) presenting, promoting or producing a range of culture, sporting or leisure events are included in Class 463 Event management.

Definition This class consists of units mainly engaged in presenting theatrical performances, including comedy. Theatrical performances are those where a dramatic narrative is the primary focus.
Units mainly engaged in: (a) opera or music theatre performance are included in Class 224 Music theatre and opera; (b) presenting puppet shows are included in Class 225 Other performing arts; (c) operating drama schools are included in Class 272 Arts education; and (d) presenting, promoting or producing a range of culture, sporting or leisure events are included in Class 463 Event management.

Definition This class consists of units mainly engaged in presenting dance performances. Also included are any units providing choreography services as their main activity.
Units mainly engaged in: (a) operating dance rehearsal studios are included in Class 226 Performing arts venues; (b) operating dance schools are included in Class 272 Arts education; (c) dance association operation (administering ethnic and/or competitive dancing) are included in Class 451 Interest clubs and groups; (d) dancing club operation (e.g. square dancing clubs) are included in Class 451 Interest clubs and groups; and (e) presenting, promoting or producing a range of culture, sporting or leisure events are included in Class 463 Event management.

Definition This class consists of units mainly engaged in presenting performances in which there is a relatively even balance between musical and theatrical elements.
Units mainly engaged in: (a) music performance, including singing on a freelance basis, are included in Class 221 Music performance; (b) drama performance are included in Class 222 Drama; (c) dance performance are included in Class 223 Dance; and (d) presenting, promoting or producing a range of culture, sporting or leisure events are included in Class 463 Event management.

Definition This class consists of units mainly engaged in presenting artistic performances which are not defined in Classes 221 to 224.
Units mainly engaged in: (a) music performance are included in Class 221 Music performance; (b) drama performance are included in Class 222 Drama; (c) operating a puppet theatre company are included in Class 222 Drama; (d) dance performance are included in Class 223 Dance; (e) opera or music theatre performance are included in Class 224 Music theatre and opera; (f) operating performing arts venues are included in Class 226 Performing arts venues; (g) promoting tours or individual performances by performing artists are included in Class 279 Arts n.e.c.; and (h) presenting, promoting or producing a range of culture, sporting or leisure events are included in Class 463 Event management.

Definition This class consists of units mainly engaged in operating venues for the presentation and rehearsal of performing arts.
Units mainly engaged in: (a) producing shows at their own venues are included in Classes 221 to 225 as appropriate; (b) operating theatre/cabaret restaurants or cafes, where the provision of a performance is the primary activity, are included in Class 225 Other performing arts; (c) operating motion picture theatres are included in Class 265 Motion picture exhibition; (d) operating dance schools are included in Class 272 Arts education; (e) operating sporting venues are included in Class 322 Other sports and physical recreation venues, grounds and facilities; (f) operating theatre/cabaret restaurants or cafes, where the provision of a performance is not the primary activity, are included in Class 432 Cafes and restaurants; (g) presenting, promoting or producing a range of culture, sporting or leisure events are included in Class 463 Event management; and (h) construction of culture and leisure venues are included in Class 471 Culture and leisure facilities construction.
