GROUP 21 – LITERATURE AND PRINT MEDIA

Group 21 Literature and print media consists of units mainly engaged in creative writing and the printing, publishing and selling of literature products including books, newspapers, periodicals, etc. It consists of the following classes:

      211 Primary literary creation;
      212 Newspaper publishing;
      213 Periodical publishing;
      214 Book publishing;
      215 Printing;
      216 Literature wholesaling;
      217 Literature retailing; and
      218 Internet publishing.

211 PRIMARY LITERARY CREATION

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in writing material for publication or performance which is intended to entertain and/or inform others. Activities include the writing of fiction and nonfiction (including text books, novels, children's books, short stories, biographies, essays, plays and poetry); articles for educational and professional books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals and newsletters; and scripts for film, stage, radio and television.


Exclusions / References

Units mainly engaged in:

(a) song writing and the writing of librettos and lyrics are included in Class 231 Music composition;

(b) providing book illustrating services are included in Class 241 Primary visual arts and crafts creation;

(c) writing copy for advertising are included in Class 252 Advertising design and production; and

(d) providing translating and interpreting services are included in Class 469 Culture and leisure support services n.e.c.

212 NEWSPAPER PUBLISHING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in publishing newspapers. Newspapers are publications containing primarily first hand reporting of current interest. Publication may be in print or audio format. Included are national, state/territory and regional newspapers, and newspapers published for special interest groups. Newspaper publishing units are also included if their main source of income is the sale of advertising space in their own newspapers.

(a) journalism and news collection are included in Class 211 Primary literary creation;

(b) periodical publishing are included in Class 213 Periodical publishing;

(c) book publishing are included in Class 214 Book publishing;

(d) printing newspapers or other literature products are included in Class 215 Printing;

(e) on-line (electronic format) newspaper publishing are included in Class 218 Internet publishing; and

(f) software publishing (other than for games) are out of scope of the classification.

213 PERIODICAL PUBLISHING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in publishing magazines and periodicals. Publication may be in print or audio format. Included are illustrated magazines and magazines devoted to common interests such as hobbies, sport and games; technical and scientific magazines; and business journals. Periodical publishing units are also included if their main source of income is the sale of advertising space in their own periodicals.

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in the preparation of textual, graphic and pictorial material intended to be either printed and bound in the form of a book, or otherwise published. Included are the publishing of fiction and nonfiction books; art, poetry, children's, professional, reference and educational books; plays; encyclopaedias; atlases; etc.

(a) newspaper publishing are included in Class 212 Newspaper publishing;

(b) periodical publishing are included in Class 213 Periodical publishing;

(c) printing books or other literature products are included in Class 215 Printing;

(e) sheet music publishing are included in Class 232 Music publishing; and

(f) reproducing audio/recorded books and periodicals are included in Class 274 Recorded media manufacturing.

215 PRINTING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in printing of literature products. Included are the printing of newspapers, periodicals, books and sheet music.

Units mainly engaged in:

(a) publishing are included in Classes 212 Newspaper publishing, 213 Periodical publishing, 214 Book publishing or 232 Music publishing as appropriate;

(b) reproducing audio/recorded books and periodicals are included in Class 274 Recorded media manufacturing;

(c) printing board games and other printed games are included in Class 481 Other culture and leisure goods manufacturing; and

(d) printing stationery and calendars, and commercial photocopying services are out of scope of the classification.

216 LITERATURE WHOLESALING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in wholesaling literature products such as newspapers, periodicals and books.

217 LITERATURE RETAILING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in retailing books, periodicals and newspapers. Dissemination may be through a shop, by mail order (including via the Internet) or by subscription. Included are general, campus, educational, children's, second hand, religious and other specialist book shops.

Units mainly engaged in:

(a) retailing of antique books are included in Class 113 Antiques and collectables dealing and restoration; and

(b) retailing sheet music are included in Class 271 Musical instrument retailing.

218 INTERNET PUBLISHING

Definition

This class consists of units mainly engaged in publishing books, periodicals, newspapers and other literature products in an electronic format on the Internet.

(a) publishing literature products in hard copy are included in Classes 212 Newspaper publishing, 213 Periodical publishing, 214 Book publishing or 232 Music publishing as appropriate; and

(b) Internet broadcasting of radio and television programmes are included in Class 269 Internet broadcasting.
