Female
'Female' is a universally accepted term used to indicate the biological characteristics of a person. Enumeration to this category is either inferred by the interviewer or accepted as reported by the respondent.

Gender
Gender, as defined by Stoller, is "the amount of masculinity or femininity found in a person".

Intersex or Indeterminate
This category is used when it is not possible for sex to be determined. It is used in surveys which include, for example, perinatal collections and hospital morbidity.

Male
'Male' is a universally accepted term used to indicate the biological characteristics of a person. Enumeration to this category is either inferred by the interviewer or accepted as reported by the respondent.

Sex
Sex is defined as the biological difference between male and female.
