Chapter 3: Family and Community
The 'Family and Community' chapter discusses definitions of both family and community in the context of statistical measurement, with a short discussion of the family counting unit and the difference between formal and informal community. The importance of family and community to wellbeing is discussed as are some of the key social issues relating to these areas. Some population groups of interest are also discussed. The 'Frameworks' section further discusses the family counting unit used by the ABS, and delineates a model of social attachment that encompasses both family and community connections. A family dynamics framework is applied in the discussion of measuring family and community issues in the context of life cycle change. Classifications used in describing family structure are summarised, including relationship in household, family type and household type classifications. Indicators of family and community wellbeing are briefly discussed. Key data sources are listed and described in summary.
