CLASSIFICATION AND CODING


THE CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA

15. The 7 criteria used in classifying persons to the classification are:

  • if the person has a condition, impairment, limitation or restriction as listed on the prompt cards
  • if the person always needs help or supervision with tasks as listed on the prompt cards
  • if the person ever needs help or supervision as listed on the prompt cards
  • if the person ever has difficulty with tasks as listed on the prompt cards
  • if the person uses aids to assist with tasks as listed on the prompt cards
  • if the person is aged 5-20 years and has an education restriction as listed on the prompt cards (the age range may vary according to the scope of the collection)
  • if the person is aged less than 65 years and has an employment restriction as listed on the prompt cards

THE STANDARD CLASSIFICATION AND CODE STRUCTURE

16. 'Severity of disability' is a 4 level hierarchical classification.

17. The categories in the classification are:

1 Disability or long-term health condition
11 Specific limitation or restriction
111 Core activity limitation
1111 Profound core activity limitation
1112 Severe core activity limitation
1113 Moderate core activity limitation
1114 Mild core activity limitation
112 Education/employment restriction only
12 No specific limitation or restriction
2 No disability or long-term health condition

18. The 7 base level categories of the classification are:

1111Profound core activity limitation
1112Severe core activity limitation
1113Moderate core activity limitation
1114Mild core activity limitation
112Education/employment restriction only
12No specific limitation or restriction

21. The 'Severity of disability' classification applies to all persons.


APPLICATION OF THE CLASSIFICATION TO OTHER VARIABLES

22. In addition to 'Severity of disability', the 'Severity of disability' classification is used to classify responses to the 'Core activity need for assistance' classification.


CODING PROCEDURES

23. Responses to the 'Severity of disability' variable are stored as codes of the classification. The 'Severity of disability' classification does not require a coding index.
