OFFENDERS

There were a total of 295,642 offenders proceeded against by police during 2007-08 in Australia, excluding Western Australia. The rate of offenders dealt with by police ranged from 1,050 offenders per 100,000 people aged 10 years and over in Victoria to 4,372 offenders per 100,000 people aged 10 years and over in the Northern Territory.

Repeat offenders

In all states and territories, the majority of offenders were proceeded against by police only once during 2007-08. This ranged from 67% in Tasmania to 78% in Victoria. Tasmania had the highest proportion of offenders who were proceeded against 5 times or more (8% of offenders).
