OFFENDERS
Victorian data are underestimated for the following principal offences: public order, property damage and environmental pollution and offences against justice. Proceedings involving the issuing of penalty/infringement notices in Victoria are not included in this publication. This will also have an impact on the total offender rate. For more information see paragraph 35 of the Explanatory Notes.
For the 2007-08 reference period, police in Victoria proceeded against 48,378 offenders. This equated to a rate of 1,050 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over in Victoria.
There were more than three times as many male offenders (37,196) as female offenders (11,074). Males had an offender rate of 1,639 offenders per 100,000 males aged 10 years and over, compared to a rate of 474 female offenders per 100,000 females aged 10 years and over.
The median age for all female offenders was 24 years compared to 25 years for males.
As illustrated by the following graph, males had higher offending rates for all age groups compared to females. The age group with the highest offender rate for both sexes was the 15-19 year age group.
