Page tools: | ||
NAME OF ORGANISATION In 1991, 1995 and 1999 this survey was a supplement to the Monthly Labour Force Survey. In 2002 the General Social Survey was used as the collection vehicle. A repeat of the survey in 2005–06 uses the Multi-Purpose Household Survey as the collection vehicle. This collection collects data on attendance at a range of cultural venues and events as well as attendance at sports events. Attendances are cross classified by demographic characteristics. Attendance is a key performance indicator for a number of culture and leisure venues and activities. This survey provides data on attendance at selected cultural venues and events, and sporting matches or competitions. The survey also collects socio-demographic details on attendees and non-attendees to enable cultural and sporting bodies to understand the profile of their audiences. Principal users are the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) of the ABS, the Cultural Ministers Council Statistical Working Group (CMC SWG), the Department of Communication, Information Technology and the Arts, and the Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport (SCORS) Research Group. The scope of the collection includes all persons resident in Australia and aged 15 and over except: In the Monthly Population Survey, coverage rules are applied which aim to ensure that each person is associated with only one dwelling, and hence has only one chance of selection. The chance of a person being enumerated at two separate dwellings in the one survey is considered to be negligible. See 6203.0 Explanatory Notes paragraph 43 for information about the effect of the coverage rules on family statistics. Conceptual framework Not applicable - the survey does not rely on a conceptual framework Main outputs For persons in scope of the collection, attendances during the previous 12 months at a range of selected cultural venues and sports events cross-classified by demographic characteristics (e.g. State, age, sex, country of birth, labour force status). Classifications No applicable classification. Other concepts (summary) Not applicable Comments and/or Other Regions Excludes some 175,000 persons living in remote and sparsely settled parts of Australia. The exclusion of these persons will have only a minor impact on any aggregate estimates that are produced for individual States and Territories with the exception of NT where such people account for over 20% of the population. Frequency comments The survey was conducted in 19991, 1995 and 1999 as a supplement to the MPS. Attendance data were collected on the General Social Survey in 2002. Most recently attendance data were collected on the 2005–06 Multi-Purpose Household Survey. 6/1991 First survey conducted on a sub-sample of the monthly population survey (all persons aged 18 years and over in half of the MPS sample (approximately 16,000 dwellings)). Personal interviews were used to collect data on only cultural venues and activities (not sports activities). 3/1995 Survey repeated with the addition of questions on sports attendance. Questions asked of one randomly selected person 15 years of age and over per household for 7/8ths of the MPS sample. 4/1999 Survey repeated using telephone interviews and answers provided by ARAs. Questions asked of one randomly selected person 15 years of age and over per household for 7/8ths of the MPS sample. 2002 Survey repeated using the General Social Survey as the collection vehicle. Personal interviews were conducted using a computer assisted interviewing (CAI) questionnaire. Questions were asked of one randomly selected person aged 18 years or over from each participating household. The sample was accumulated during the period March to July 2002. 2005–06 Survey repeated using the Multi-Purpose Household Survey as the collection vehicle. Personal interviews were conducted using a computer assisted interviewing (CAI) questionnaire. Questions were asked of one randomly selected person aged 15 years or over from each participating household. The sample was accumulated over a twelve month period from July 2005 to June 2006. Data availability comments Expected every 3 to 4 years, approximately 7 months after the reference period. Document Selection These documents will be presented in a new window.
