APPENDIX IV. MULTIPLE CAUSE OF DEATH ANALYSIS CURRENTLY UNDERTAKEN BY ABS
History of ABS multiple cause of death data
Until 1996 the ABS produced causes of death statistics in which each death was assigned a single underlying cause only. From calendar year 1997 ABS has data coded and tabulated all causes and conditions reported on each death certificate. This enhanced data has been used to publish multiple cause statistics since Causes of Death Australia, 1997 (cat.no. 3303.0). This publication established the basic multiple cause of death tables which are now included in annual Causes of Death, Australia publications.
Current Causes of Death, Australia tabulations
Causes of Death Australia, 2001 included the following tables of multiple cause of death data:
Table 1: DISTRIBUTION OF DEATHS, Number of causes per death and age
Table 2: UNDERLYING AND NUMBER OF CAUSES OF DEATH REPORTED
Table 3: UNDERLYING AND MULTIPLE CAUSES OF DEATH MENTIONS, Numbers and ratios
Table 4: CAUSES OF DEATH, Underlying cause and most common associated causes
Table 5: CAUSES OF DEATH, Associated cause and underlying cause
Table 6: NATURE OF INJURY, External cause
