Tasmania produces in excess of 25% of Australia's total onion crop with production only behind that of South Australia, which is the main producing State.
Despite the loss of some export markets in recent years, onions in Tasmania are still mainly grown for export. Most onions are grown on the fertile soils in the north west and almost all the rest are grown around Scottsdale in the north east.
