Census Household Sample File - a statistical modelling tool
The Household Sample File (HSF) is a random sample of all the person, family and dwelling records collected in the census. It is used for statistical purposes such as regression analysis and data modelling.
The HSF is particularly useful for government, industry organisations and academic researchers for a wide spectrum of demographic research. Users can cross-tabulate variables to meet specific criteria, producing information to better understand the Australian population, explain relationships and structures, and test theories about the population.
The 2001 HSF will be designed and produced following consultation with users of the 1996 File and other ABS clients. As an indication of the nature of this file, the 1996 HSF contained a 1% sample of private households and associated persons and a one per cent sample of persons in non-private dwellings. Extensive classificatory detail from the census was included, along with a geographic classification covering all major urban areas and selected regional areas.

Confidentiality
The HSF is released under strict conditions. Measures are taken to protect the confidentiality of the unit record information supplied in the file - the level of geographic detail is restricted and certain classifications are collapsed. Potential users are asked to describe how they will use the file and for what purpose, and are then required to sign an undertaking to ensure that the information will be used for statistical purposes only.
