Accessing Census data just got easier
The ABS web site which provides access to all statistical products produced by the ABS including Census data, is about to undergo another major improvement.
The planned changes will make it easier for people to find statistics and products on the web site through improved navigation and grouping of related information.
When the web site changes, statistical products can be
browsed by:
• Topics that reflect areas of statistical interest
• Product Title
• ABS Catalogue Number
• Date of Release
Navigation to Census data will also adopt the new look. Although Census data will be accessible via the navigation methods mentioned above (e.g. Product Title, ABS Catalogue number, etc), Census products will be treated slightly differently due to the large amount of geographic detail.
From the Census link on the ABS home page, alternative methods of navigation will be presented including being able to browse Census data by location (name list or map) and profile name.
Once a user finds a product of interest, they will be presented with a tabbed interface that groups related information together. For Census products, the ‘product summary’ tab will contain an abstract, an overview of what Census products are available for the selected region and the Snapshot (if one exists).
The ‘product details’ tab will allow users to download or purchase available data e.g. Basic Community Profile, Indigenous Profile and Times Series Profile.
In 2006, the ABS will be expanding its range of products and services on the Internet to allow clients to have greater flexibility in choosing the data that best suits their specific requirements.
