GLOBAL CULTURAL EMPLOYMENT - UNESCO PILOT SURVEY
SUMMARY
The ABS is currently participating in the UNESCO Pilot Survey in Cultural Employment Statistics. This survey marks the first step towards the creation of a set of new indicators to measure the global contribution of culture to economic and social development, and the conditions of those employed in the cultural sector. Australia is one of 20 countries invited to participate in the pilot survey. The purpose of the pilot survey is to test and assess the data collection instrument, the availability of data, as well as the data collection process and response burden on countries.
Participating in the survey was not without challenges due to differences in the international and Australian classifications used when collecting labour force, occupation and industry data. The ABS has also provided feedback to the survey developers.
The analysis of the results will help to inform the global survey that the UNESCO Institute for Statistics plans to undertake in 2015.
