(ii) Gambling services previously conducted in respect of 2000-01, 1997-98 and 1994-95 (iii) Clubs (Hospitality) services previously conducted in respect of 2000-01, 1997-98 and 1994-95 (iv) Pubs, Taverns and Bars services previously conducted in respect of 2000-01, 1997-98 and 1994-95 Phase 1 of testing for the 2004-05 surveys has been completed. (ii) Wholesale The Retail Industry and Wholesale Industry Surveys are designed primarily to collect and disseminate comprehensive data on the size and structure of the wholesale and retail industries. These surveys were last run in respect of the 1998-99 financial year. Based on budget considerations, burden on businesses, and user discussions held to date, the likely outputs will include:
Small area data (e.g. Local Government Area) will not be available. It is expected that results from the 2005-06 survey(s) will be available and published by December 2007. For further information on these two surveys, contact Gabrielle Robbie on (02) 6252 6133 or email gabrielle.robbie@abs.gov.au The service industries program for 2006-07 onwards is still subject to review. A recent assessment of client needs for annual data from businesses has highlighted the need for the ABS to rethink its annual collection program, as currently there is a degree of unmet demand in some areas. We will not have enough funds to maintain the current collection program and respond to these areas of unmet demand for data. Trade-offs will be required, where the frequency of some collections and the levels at which detail is available, could be reduced to free capacity to address these data needs. The ABS is exploring the option of having a core industry collection to provide annual economy wide financial data, plus a rolling program of industry specific collections to provide more detailed financial and geographic data, as well as commodity data. This project aims to integrate the current suite of annual accounting based business collections into a single system known as the Annual Integrated Collection (AIC). Some of the benefits of this integrated system include improved data quality and coherence across the range of collections the ABS undertakes and increased operational efficiencies. Current thinking is that any changes to the program of annual collections would be introduced from the 2006-07 reference year onwards. The client needs gathered to date are still subject to review and further refinement. There will be a phased transition to the new program, rather than introducing it all at once. Over the following months the ABS will release an information paper which will describe the key aspects of the AIC; make a preliminary assessment of the data requirements of the AIC; and seek to obtain feedback from clients that may be effected by changes to the collection. Users of the data and others will be invited to comment on any aspect of the collection. In particular, users will be asked to notify the ABS of any particular requirement that they have of the collection.
