DATA POOLING OF ADULT PARTICIPATION IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

SUMMARY

The ABS conducts an ongoing Multi-Purpose Household Survey. Modules of this survey are used to collect a range of data on adult participation in sport and physical recreation. Specific information is collected about the characteristics of participants, the sports and physical recreation activities they engage in, and the frequency of participation. Data is currently available for 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2011-12. The ABS is undertaking a data pooling project to combine data from the three collections to create a single dataset which will be larger than any one collection and enable finer detailed analysis.

A feasibility study has been undertaken to investigate the datasets available for the three collection years to ensure that the data collected across the years is comparable and in the same format to enable the datasets to be merged and re-weighted as a single dataset. The feasibility study revealed that while there were differences in data items over the collection years, usually brought about by the changing requirements of users, amendments to the data items to align them did not compromise the comparability of the data.

The data pooling project will result in detailed analysis that will assist federal and state government agencies to plan, deliver and evaluate sport and physical recreation programs more effectively. Results will comprise National and State/Territory tables for up to 20 sports and physical recreation activities as well as national level commentary and graphs. Results will be available in June 2014.
