WHOLESALE INDUSTRY SURVEY 1998-99

Sports footwear is an example of sports and physical recreation products which could not be included in the table from the Wholesale Industry Survey (table 11.2) because they were part of a larger product category predominantly out-of-scope of the ACLC Product Classification. Conversely, bait supplies for fishing is an example of out-of-scope products which are included in the table because they are part of a product category which is predominantly in scope. In addition, the product category Bicycles and ride-on toys combines a sports and physical recreation product (bicycles) with other leisure products (ride-on toys). This category is also included in the equivalent table for other leisure products in Other leisure products (table 14.2). As a result of the preceding, it is not possible to sum the sales figures for each product in table 11.2 to obtain an estimate of total sales of all sports and physical recreation products.

For 1998-99, the product category with the greatest value of wholesale sales was Swimwear, tracksuits and other sportswear which recorded $526.4m. This was followed by Other sporting goods with $462.4m. These categories also had the highest percentage margins with 39.1% and 33.4% respectively. Other sporting goods includes the balls, bats, racquets and other equipment used in the playing of sport.
