Classification of Pentecostal Religious Affiliation in the 2001 Census

The 2001 Census included an optional question on each person's Religious Affiliation. Answers to this question are classified according to the Australian Standard Classification of Religious Groups (ASCRG).

As a result of an oversight in 2001 Census processing, 75,220 responses to the question on Religious Affiliation have been included in the category '2000 Christian, n.f.d.' in the Religious Affiliation classification. These responses should correctly be included in the category '2400 Pentecostal, n.f.d.'. The 'Christian n.f.d.' category forms part of the group 'Other Christian' which appears in the Basic Community Profile (BCP), while 'Pentecostal n.f.d.' forms part of the 'Pentecostal' group in the BCP.

This misclassified data appears in the first release of the BCP (Cat. No. 2001.0), the publication Selected Social and Housing Characteristics, Australia, 2001 (Cat. No. 2015.0), the Classification Counts, as well as the first release of CDATA and Census Basics. The corrected data will be included in the second release of the BCP, Classification Counts, CDATA and Census Basics.

The table below shows the number of people in each State and Territory whose responses were coded to Christian, n.f.d. instead of Pentecostal, n.f.d., and the corrected totals for the Christian, n.f.d. and Pentecostal, n.f.d. categories, and the Pentecostal and Other Christian groups. Tables showing these counts for Statistical Local Areas and Collection Districts are attached below.
