Introduction 4.1 The national accounts record the essential elements of a market economy: production, income, consumption (intermediate and final), accumulation of assets and liabilities, and wealth. Under headings for each of these basic elements, this chapter explains how the elements are embodied in the national accounts and describes the more important national accounting concepts, aggregates and balancing items that reflect the economic elements.
