Chapter 7 - Reference products
A series of reference products will contain information about Census concepts, terms, geography and many other aspects of the 2006 Census. Key reference material will be accessible through the ABS web site, and also in The Census Guide, a free CD-ROM reference product.
The Census Guide
The Census Guide (cat. no. 2914.0.30.003) is a reference CD-ROM designed specifically for use with 2006 Census data and will be available free of charge. It will include The Census Dictionary, Directory of Census Statistics, Information and Technical Papers, sample Community Profile data and product demonstrations. A simple and intuitive interface will be presented for users to access the information and web site links will also be made available. The product will have three releases to coincide with the collection of the Census and the release of first and second release data.
Census Dictionary
The 2006 Census Dictionary (cat. no. 2901.0) is designed to assist users in understanding Census data and in specifying customised data requests. It provides comprehensive definitions of Census terms and concepts and describes all Census output classifications. The Dictionary will be available well before the release of Census data so that users may plan their standard and customised data requests.

How Australia Takes a Census
The publication How Australia Takes a Census (cat. no. 2903.0) takes a look at the history of the Census, the planning process and the way in which the Census is conducted. It describes how the content is determined, the methods used to collect the data and how this information is processed, evaluated and published.
Indicative release date: February 2006
Census Update
Census Update (cat. no. 2902.0) is a free newsletter designed to keep Census data users informed of developments in products and services. It highlights recent and forthcoming releases, provides case studies of Census data usage, and details the features and benefits of the range of Census electronic products.
Indicative release date: Irregular (3 or 4 issues annually)
Directory of Census Statistics
The Directory of Census Statistics (cat. no. 2910.0) is a reference to the range of products and services to be developed from the 2006 Census. It will contain a summary of the broad range of publications, electronic products, maps and consultancy services available from the 2006 Census. A brief description of each product or service will be provided, as well as details of geographic coverage, price, availability by medium and ordering information. The Directory will be published in several editions as release dates become more definate.
Indicative release date: First issue mid 2006, last issue late 2008
Information Papers
A series of fact sheets and information papers providing details about many aspects of the 2006 Census will be produced.
FACT SHEETS
Fact sheets will be published in response to issues that arise during and after the publication of Census data. The topics covered in fact sheets will include:
- reference material to assist in accessing Census information
- guidance in the interpretation of specific data topics (especially for new or changed topics)
- information about the quality attributes of topics (e.g. response rates).
Indicative release date: Irregular, from June 2006
CENSUS UNDERCOUNT
The Census of Population and Housing, Data Quality - Undercount (cat. no. 2940.0) information paper, will provide an assessment of the undercount in the 2006 Census and will discuss the results of the 2006 Post Enumeration Survey undertaken shortly after the Census. Estimates of the undercount will be shown separately for each state/territory, each capital city, and rest of state, and examined for a selected range of demographic characteristics.
