All statistical divisions recorded population increases in the 12 months to June 2003. The Northern statistical division recorded an increase of 1.1%, Greater Hobart 1.0%, Southern 0.9% and Mersey-Lyell 0.7%.

In the 12 months to June 2003, the Tasmanian resident population increased by 0.9%. Some 24 of Tasmania's 29 local government areas recorded population growth, with George Town municipality recording the largest growth rate of 3.1%, followed by Kingborough, 2.1%, Latrobe, 2.1%, Glamorgan/Spring Bay, 2.1%, Break O'Day, 1.5%, Central Highlands, 1.5%, and Devonport, 1.5%.

In the same period, there was a 3.0% decrease in the population of the West Coast municipality, while Tasman and Dorset followed with population decreases of 2.2% and 0.9% respectively.
