Carer Allowance helps parents or carers to care for disabled children and adults at home. A person may get Carer Allowance if the child or adult needs a lot of additional care or attention in his or her own home. Assistance may be in the form of a fortnightly payment and/or a Health Care Card. Carer allowance may be paid in addition to Carer Payment or other payments such as the Age Pension.
As at 1 June 2001, recipients of Carer Allowance were most likely to be found in Brighton and Central Highlands. Both of these local government areas recorded rates of 21.7 recipients per 1,000 persons.
