INTRODUCTION

The 2004–05 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) is the largest Indigenous health survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The survey collected health-related information from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. This booklet provides a summary of the main results from the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey 2004–05 (cat. no. 4715.0).

Information received by the ABS is treated in strict confidence as required by the Census and Statistics Act 1905.

The success of the 2004–05 NATSIHS was dependent on the very high level of cooperation the ABS received from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities. Their continued cooperation is very much appreciated. Without it, the range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander statistics published by the ABS would not be possible.

Why conduct a separate health survey for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

There are too few Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people selected in the National Health Survey (NHS) to produce reliable estimates about the health of Indigenous Australians across all states and territories, and by remoteness.

The 2004–05 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) sampled 10,400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, selected from every state and territory, including remote areas. This large sample allows for more reliable estimates to be produced.

The NATSIHS survey content is similar to the NHS, however it also collects other information relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's health.
In this booklet, comparisons are made between the health characteristics of Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians using information from the 2004–05 NATSIHS and the 2004–05 NHS.
