2006 General Social Survey
The first General Social Survey (GSS) was conducted in 2002 to provide a profile of the socioeconomic characteristics of Australia's adult population. The 2002 GSS covered a wide range of topics including family relationships and engagement with wider social networks, health, educational opportunities and outcomes, housing, access to transport, employment and other work, personal safety and security, income, and financial stress.
The GSS was repeated in 2006, but with a wider range of indicators of social and community capital and wellbeing. Notably, questions about visa category were included – in addition to questions on country of birth and proficiency in spoken English. Products from the 2006 GSS will become available shortly, including:
- the publication, General Social Survey: Summary Results, Australia, 2006 (cat. no. 4159.0), which will be released on the ABS web site on 22 May
- confidentialised unit record files (CURFs), available on 30 May (see the CURF Microdata Entry Page), and
- state and territory tables, to be released on the ABS web site on 15 June.
