NatStats 2010 Conference



The Australian Bureau of Statistics and the National Statistical Service are pleased to announce that Prof Paul Cheung, Director of the United Nations Statistics Division, will be opening the second day of sessions at the upcoming NatStats 2010 Conference. Prof Cheung will also be speaking as part of a detailed panel discussion titled, "Measuring progress: from theory to practice", alongside Dr David Gruen, Director of the Macro-Economic Group at the Treasury.

Dr Ken Henry, Secretary to the Treasury, will deliver the opening plenary address at the conference and the Hon Dr Geoff Gallop AC, Director of the Graduate School of Government at the University of Sydney, will deliver a presentation focused around improving the wellbeing of Australians.

Other NatStats 2010 key note speakers include Ms Martine Durand, Chief Statistician and Director of the OECD Statistics Directorate, and Mr Phil Lowe, Assistant Governor (Economic) of the Reserve Bank of Australia, who will be examining some of the changes we can expect to witness in the global economy over the next 50 years.

NatStats 2010, an initiative of the National Statistical Service, will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, from 15 - 17 September 2010.

The conference will bring together an array of leaders and high profile commentators, researchers and policy makers from all levels of government, academia, community and business. This significant event was initiated to assist in the development of a collaborative approach to national statistics. It focuses on various issues surrounding quantitative and qualitative research, which have been highlighted by key government initiatives.

The overall theme of this year's conference is, "Measuring what counts: economic development, wellbeing and progress in 21st century Australia". Delegates will discuss issues surrounding various topics including;

1. Challenges facing Australian society: issues, policy and information.

2. Australia in the global economy.

3. Improving Australians' wellbeing.

4. Measuring progress: from theory to practice.

NatStats 2010 will build on the success of the first NatStats Conference held in 2008, where around 480 delegates attended. A major outcome of the 2008 conference was the tabling of a statistical declaration to guide the development of a national statistical strategy for Australia in the 21st century.

An exciting program is being developed and will address a range of pertinent issues relating to national statistics, particularly in regards to where improvements in statistics, or to the broader statistical system, should be made in order to support an effective response.
