Graph 16.18 shows the contribution of the mining industry to GDP for 2001 for selected countries. The Australian mining industry's contribution to GDP (4.8%), was higher than for Canada, United Kingdom, Brazil and United States but lower than South Africa (6.8%). Diamonds, platinum, gold, and coal were some of the more important minerals in terms of sales value in South Africa, while gold, nickel, potash and copper were the most significant minerals in terms of value of production in Canada.
