Production of sugar cane is a major component of Queensland agriculture and is carried out in most of the river flats in the fertile coastal valleys. Cultivation is intensive and irrigation is used wherever practicable, as in the Burdekin and Bundaberg areas. Harvesting in most districts begins about June and ends in November or December. The 2006-07 agricultural commodity survey reported production of 33.1 million tonnes of sugar cane from 383,000 hectares, resulting in an average yield of 86.3 tonnes per hectare for the season. In 2006-07, over 70% of all sugar cane cut for crushing produced in Queensland came from the Northern and Mackay Statistical Divisions (13.8 million and 10.3 million tonnes respectively). Cotton lint production was 69,100 tonnes which was a significant decrease on 2005-06. This was the result of extremely low water availability at the time of planting combined with adverse seasonal conditions. COTTON LINT, Queensland
