The Dietary Guidelines for Australians (NHMRC, 1992) recommend:
- eating a wide variety of nutritious foods
- eating plenty of breads and cereals (preferably wholegrain), vegetables (including legumes) and fruits
- eating a diet low in fat (particularly saturated fat)
- eating only a moderate amount of sugars and foods containing added sugars
- choosing low salt foods and using salt sparingly
- eating foods containing calcium (particularly important for females)
- eating foods containing iron (particularly important to females, vegetarians and athletes)
- maintaining a healthy body weight by balancing food intake with physical activity.
