OVERVIEW
The survey of Libraries, Museums & the Arts 1996/97 reference year was the first time the ABS has conducted a survey on this sector.
PURPOSE
To provide key measures on the performance of the Libraries, Museums & the Arts sector. To identify the nature and structure of the industry/activity in terms of employment, income, costs and its contribution to the Australian economy.
SCOPE
The collection was a survey of businesses and organisations mainly engaged in the libraries, museums, parks and gardens and the arts industries. As with other service industry surveys, the scope of the collection was based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC).
The ANZSIC has been produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the New Zealand Department of Statistics for the use in the collection and publication of statistics of the two countries. To enhance the international comparability of statistics, the ANZSIC has been aligned with the International Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC), Revision 3, wherever possible.
The scope of this collection was Subdivision 92 of the ANZSIC which contains the following 9 classes:
- 9210 Libraries plus public libraries
- 9220 Museums plus government museums
- 9231 Zoological and Botanic gardens
- 9239 Recreational Parks and Gardens plus local government
- 9241 Music and Theatre Productions
- 9242 Creative Arts
- 9251 Sound Recording Studios
- 9252 Performing Arts Venues plus local government PAV
- 9259 Other Services to the Arts

The publications present statistics classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) (1292.0). Each business is classified to a single industry. The industry allocated is based on an estimate expenditure on the primary service activity of the business irrespective of whether a range of activities or a single activity is undertaken by the business.

COLLECTION HISTORY
1996-96 was the first year ABS collected data on Libraries, museums and the Arts. A subsequent collection of cultural industries (including Public Libraries, Museums, Botanic Gardens, Music and Theatre Productions, Performing Arts Venues, Performing Arts Festivals, Commercial Art Galleries, Television Services, Motion Picture Exhibition, Film and Video Production and Distribution was conducted in respect of 1999-00.
