The total fertility rate represents the average number of children a female would bear during her lifetime if she experienced current age-specific fertility rates at each age of her reproductive life. The following graph shows that from 1975 to 1980 the fertility rate in Tasmania fell sharply from 2.2 to 2.0 children. The rate has since varied between 1.8 and 2.1, and in 2004 and 2005 it returned to levels of 1.9 and 2.1, respectively.
