At the Census 2001, some 15,773 people, or 3.6% of the Tasmanian population who stated whether or not they were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, identified as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin.
Of Tasmanian local government areas (LGAs), Flinders and Huon Valley recorded the highest proportions of their populations identifying as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, with 17.6% and 10.2% respectively. Hobart and West Tamar recorded the lowest proportions their populations identifying as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, with 1.4% and 1.5% respectively.
