52. The characteristics of different types of visitors differ significantly. Consequently, it is desirable to have separate data according to whether:

(a) the visitor is an international or domestic visitor

(b) the visitor is staying overnight or is a same-day visitor.

53. To reflect these requirements, the consumer element is split into the following categories.

Category		Component		Definition
1.		International visitor		A person who resides in another country and travels to Australia for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose of visit is other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within Australia.
	1.1		Overnight visitor	An international visitor who stays at least one night in Australia.
	1.2		Same-day visitor	An international visitor who does not spend a night in Australia.
2.		Domestic visitor		A person residing in Australia, who travels to a place within this country, outside his/her usual environment (i.e.the location is at least 40 kilometres from home for overnight trips and at least 50 kilometres from home for day trips and not on a regular trip between home and work/education), for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose of visit is other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited.
	2.1		Overnight visitor	A domestic visitor who stays at least one night in the place visited.
	2.2		Same-day visitor	A domestic visitor who does not spend a night in the place visited.
