APS Data Profession
An Australian Public Service (APS) workforce initiative known as the Data Profession was established in September 2020. As we see unprecedented growth in the availability and value of data, the Profession was created to lift data capability across the APS.
The Data Profession is a partnership between the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ABS leads the Data Profession with Australian Statistician, Dr David Gruen AO, as Head of Profession.
“Data is more important than ever, and maintaining the public’s trust is a critical enabler in ensuring that quality information is available for informed decision making and service delivery.
“We have an opportunity to work together to support innovative ways to collect, share and use data responsibly to meet the needs of the day.” – Dr David Gruen AO
The Data Profession aims to attract, develop, and retain the data capabilities of our data professionals and the APS more broadly.
Get involved
We all have a responsibility to use data to better support the work of our agencies, and inform service delivery, policy, and program decisions to meet the needs of Australians.
The Data Profession is open to all APS employees with an interest in learning more about data and working with it.
By becoming a Data Profession member, you will have exclusive access to our Members Community Platform (MCP). You will be able to connect and collaborate with other professionals interested in sharing and improving their data skills; ask questions and engage in discussions; source events and find and share learning resources to increase your data capabilities.
