12. ASGC-related material and products
The ASGC manual is essentially a reference document. Consequently, additional and more specialised ASGC-related material and products are needed to assist application of the ASGC to statistical work. Many of these materials and products are available for sale to ABS clients, as well as for use by ABS personnel. The following is a listing of some of the more important types of related material and products.
ASGC-RELATED PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
National Localities Index (NLI)
The NLI (Cat. no. 1252.0) is a coding tool designed to assist users assign the ASGC Main Structure codes to street address information. Once coded to the ASGC Main Structure direct comparisons to other ABS statistical information may be made. The NLI is updated regularly and maintained in accordance with each edition of the ASGC.
The NLI consists of two parts - a Localities Index and a Streets Sub-Index. The Localities Index contains a list of all Localities in Australia. In broad terms, a Locality is a place where people live or work - or say they live or work. Localities are assigned their full ASGC Main Structure code (i.e. S/T, SD, SSD and SLA codes). The majority of Localities lie wholly within one SLA but where they are split between two or more SLAs, street information is recorded in the Streets Sub-Index.
Two products are available: the Index files and the NLI Coder. The Index files are produced as ASCII, comma delimited text files, of fixed field lengths suitable for loading into micro or mainframe computers. The NLI Coder is a standard 16 bit Windows application that provides an easy to use search engine which enables the user to assign an ASGC code to individual addresses.
Maps and digital boundaries
Maps depicting the census editions of the ASGC were included in 1986, 1991 and 1996 Census publications. Maps of the ASGC Edition 2001 Main Structure are included in this publication. Digital boundaries for ASGC Editions 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 (all structures) are available separately. The ABS recently released a CDROM product, Historic ASGC Digital Boundaries, Australia (Cat. no. 1261.0.30.001). This contains digital ASGC and pre-ASGC boundaries. The boundaries are for 1981 (pre ASGC), 1986 (ASGC Edition 3), 1991 (ASGC Edition 2.1), 1992 (ASGC Edition 2.2), 1993 (ASGC Edition 2.3), 1994 (ASGC Edition 2.4) and 1995 (ASGC Edition 2.5). The 1981, 1986 and 1991 data include Census Collection Districts while data for 1992 onwards are for SLA, SSD, SD and S/T only.
Printed A3 size maps for the Main Structure of ASGC Editions 1991-1998 (Cat. no. 1216.0.05.001) are available.
Labels and codes
Listings of ASGC labels and codes are available for all structures and all editions of the ASGC (Cat. no. 1216.0.15.001). These listings are available electronically. The standard format is ASCII comma delimited text file.
Conversion listings and concordances
To assist users of the ASGC, the ABS has developed a number of conversion listings (concordance files) to enhance comparability of data. These concordances are available electronically in a variety of storage formats. The standard format is ASCII comma delimited text file. Concordance files are available by S/T or for the whole of Australia.

- Postal Area to ASGC Edition 2001 Concordance (to be released in 2002)
Concordance files for converting postal area (CD-derived postcodes) data to and from the ASGC 2001 Edition.
- Postal Area to ASGC Edition 1996 Concordance
Concordance files for converting postal area (CD-derived postcodes) data to and from the ASGC 1996 Edition.
- Customised Concordances
Concordances between ASGC spatial units, postal areas and other geographical units can be tailored to individual user requirements.
