2001 Census form delivery begins in earnest tomorrow

All 30,000 census collectors will be out and about this weekend delivering the first of over 9 million census forms to Australian households in readiness for census night on Tuesday 7 August.

Census Managers in all state and territories are reminding people that census form delivery will continue right up until the day before census and that people shouldn't worry if they don't receive a form in the next week or so.

It's estimated that the majority of forms will be delivered this weekend and next weekend, with delivery also occurring throughout the week, especially between 6 pm and 8-30 pm.

The support of the Australian community is requested in assisting the census collectors in their work. By leaving a porch light on, removing obstacles from entrance ways and restraining dogs, householders can make the whole process a lot smoother.

People should be aware that all Australian Bureau of Statistics census collectors will be wearing an official identification badge (including photograph) and carrying a large, yellow census bag. Census collectors are not required to enter household premises in the course of their duties.

Anyone who is not wearing their identification badge or insists on entering the household should be refused entry and the matter reported to the local police.

Census collectors have been trained to assist and advise householders in filling in their census forms. A booklet entitled "How to complete your census form" accompanies all census forms. The booklet includes answers to the most commonly asked questions and also explains the use of the information collected.

Further details, including fact sheets in many community languages, are available at www.abs.gov.au/census.
