Australians overseas not in the big count

It's exactly one week to go before the nation's big count on Census Day, Tuesday 7 August, but Australians who are overseas or who will travel out of the country before census day will not be required to fill in the census form. However, since the number of Australians temporarily overseas is known, this number will be included in official population estimates.

The Census provides a snapshot of everyone who is in Australia on census day and this includes tourists who are visiting Australia, who are required to fill in the census form.

You do not need to be staying at home on census night to be counted and so to contribute to Australia's future planning. Census collectors are hard at work delivering census forms, from hotels to hospitals to ensure everyone is counted wherever they are staying.

Special arrangements have even been made with National Park authorities to make sure anyone camping on census day will still get a census form.

The only people in Australia who will not be part of the big count are foreign diplomats and their families.

The public can find a great deal of information about the census and its questions in the booklet that is delivered with the census form. If they still have questions, they can visit www.abs.gov.au/census or phone the Census Inquiry Service on 137 219. The Inquiry Service is open seven days a week from 8-30 am to 10-00 pm.
