MEDIA RELEASE
30,000 jobs to count Australia The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today launched a massive recruitment campaign - with a total of over 30,000 jobs being filled to count Australia on Census Night, 7 August 2001. The census is a comprehensive snapshot of Australia, undertaken every five years. It is a great national project that underpins our democracy, playing a major role in setting electoral boundaries. It provides a primary source of information used by a wide range of government and non-government organisations alike in planning for the future. The ABS is ready to train the huge number of Collectors being taken on throughout Australia to perform a vital role in their community. Census Collectors deliver a census form and a census guide to every household in their collection district prior to census night and subsequently collect them. Application forms are available from Australia Post offices, agencies and Business Centres. These positions are ideal for people over 18 who want temporary, part-time work over a number of weeks around census time. Census Collectors generally would be able to do the work on evenings and at weekends. Collectors will be paid between $800 and $1,500 before tax, depending on workload. To mark the first census of the new millennium, the ABS will be issuing every 2001 Census worker with a commemorative pin.
