QUALITY DECLARATION - SUMMARY RELEVANCE The 2006-07 Digital Game Development Services Survey emerged from broader data requirements of the ABS Television, Film and Video Production and Post-Production Survey, also conducted for the 2006-07 reference period. Digital game development businesses have not previously been surveyed by the ABS and this collection represents a milestone in the expansion of ABS statistics in relation to creative digital content. The main purpose of the collection is to provide a measure of the financial and business structure of digital game development businesses in Australia. The data published include: The collection complements the 2006-07 Television, Film and Video Production and Post-Production Survey, scheduled to be released in July 2008. TIMELINESS Collection forms were dispatched to digital game development businesses in mid-August 2007. The ABS aims to publish estimates from its business survey program within twelve months of the end of the reference period. ACCURACY The ABS aims to produce high quality data from its industry collections. To achieve this, extensive effort is put into form design, collection procedures and processing. The estimates contained in this publication were based on a census of all digital game development businesses, and hence are not subject to sampling error. For this collection, non-sampling error may result from such things as deficiencies in reporting and/or errors made in compiling results. The extent to which non-sampling error affected the results of the collection is not precisely quantifiable. Every effort was made to minimise non-sampling error by careful design and testing of the questionnaire, efficient operating procedures and systems and the use of appropriate methodology. For the 2006-07 Digital Game Development Services Survey, there was a 93.6% response rate from all game development businesses that were surveyed and found to be operating during the reference period. Data were imputed for the remaining 6.6% of operating businesses. Imputed responses contributed 0.3% to the estimate of total income. COHERENCE Data were compared to other key sources of industry information available. Comparisons conducted by the ABS showed that the data from this survey are consistent with other available sources of information. INTERPRETABILITY Estimates from the 2006-07 Digital Game Development Services Survey are presented in current terms, and are not seasonally or trend adjusted. Although financial data estimates in this publication relate to the full twelve months of the 2006-07 financial year, employment estimates relate to the last pay period ending in June 2007, or the last pay period of the month specified. As such, ratio estimates, e.g. labour costs per employee, can be affected by any fluctuations in employment during the reference period. Further information about the terminology and other technical aspects of these statistics can be found in the Explanatory Notes and Glossary.
