Contents >> Appendix 6 - Classification of type of medication

In the 2001 National Health Survey, information was obtained about medications used for selected conditions only; asthma, cancer, heart and circulatory conditions and diabetes mellitus or high sugar levels. From the product or brand name recorded, pharmaceutical medications were office coded to the following classification of generic type, shown below. Medications reported by respondents as vitamin and mineral supplements and natural and herbal medications were separately grouped to these broad groups only.

This classification of type of medication is based on relevant excerpts from the WHO's Anatomical Therapuetic Chemical classification (ATC) (relevant ATC codes are shown in brackets next to lower level category titles as appropriate) and the framework (based on organ system and therapeutic drug class) underlying the listing of medications in the Australian Medicines Handbook, 2000.
