RELEVANCE
Final estimates from the Agricultural Land and Water Ownership Survey (ALWOS) - 31 December 2010 will be presented in Agricultural Land and Water Ownership, 2010 (cat. no. 7127.0).
TIMELINESS
Agricultural Land and Water Ownership, 2010 (cat. no. 7127.0) is published within 9 months of the end of the reference period.
ACCURACY
Data from the ALWOS are based on a response rate of 92% and have been extensively quality assured. The resultant value estimates have been checked against relevant other sources, including previous Agricultural Surveys and contact with data providers, to ensure the accuracy of the estimates produced. The estimates were reviewed against data from the 1983-84 Agricultural Census and a subsequent supplementary survey of foreign ownership, noting that changes in collection methodology have made results between the collections not directly comparable. The Survey does not include foreign owned forestry or fishing. All key estimates are subject to sampling errors
COHERENCE
The ALWOS was conducted using a frame based on the Australian Taxation Office's Australian Business Register (ABR). This frame has been used since the 2005-06 Agricultural Census and for subsequent annual agricultural surveys. It is recommended that care be taken when comparing estimates to the Agricultural survey and other related surveys due to differences in scope and methodology.
INTERPRETABILITY
The ALWOS provides data for the following categories of outputs:
- foreign ownership of agricultural businesses in Australia (count and percentage);
- foreign ownership of Australian agricultural land (area of holding and percentage); and
- foreign ownership of water entitlements used for agricultural purposes in Australia (volume).
Detailed explanatory notes are provided to assist users in determining and specifying their data requirements and to understand the concepts underlying the data.
