The key source of data used in this publication is produced by the Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science.(see: http://www.industry.gov.au/aboutus/pages/default.aspx). The other main data sources used to construct this publication are the Energy Use, Electricity Generation and Environment Management, Australia (cat. no. 4660.0); and the Economic Activity Survey (EAS) for 2013-14 conducted by the ABS.


RELEVANCE

Energy Account, Australia, (EAA) cat. no. 4604.0) presents physical supply and use tables, monetary supply and use tables and Hybrid energy supply and use tables allow analysts to better understand energy use patterns in Australia. It includes:

• Physical supply and use data by energy product and industry, 2002-03 to 2013-14;
• Monetary supply and use data by energy product and industry, 2008-09 to 2013-14;
• Hybrid (Physical and Monetary) energy supply and use, 2008-09 to 2012-13;
• Energy Asset Accounts, 2002-03 to 2013-14; and
• Energy Indicators, 2002-03 to 2013-14.

EAA was developed using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA). SEEA was first published by the United Nations (UN) in 1993 and elevated to an international standard in 2012.


TIMELINESS

Both the Physical supply and use data and Monetary supply and use data in Energy Account, Australia are released within 20 months of the end of the reference period and contain the latest available Department of Industry, Innovation and Science data. The Hybrid (Physical and Monetary) Energy Use table is scheduled to be released approximately 28 months after the reference period. It utilises data principally from the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, ABS Input–Output tables, EAS and the ABS publication Energy Use, Electricity Generation and Environmental Management. ACCURACY

Physical data in Energy Account, Australia, 2013-14 are based on the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Australian Energy Statistics. This data have been adjusted to better accord with an Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) (cat. no. 1292.0) industry-based view, using data from the EAS, the Survey of Motor Vehicle Use (cat. no. 9208.0) and Energy Use, Electricity Generation and Environment Management, Australia (cat. no. 4660.0).


COHERENCE

Data for total physical flows of energy are largely coherent with data published in earlier editions of the EAA, although there have been revisions to source data for previous reference years. The allocation of energy conversions by industry in this edition is not completely coherent with previous editions.

As data presented in the EAA are using the ANZSIC, it allows data in the EAA to be related to other economic statistics that use this classification, most notably the Australian System of National Accounts (cat. no. 5204.0).
