QUALITY DECLARATION - SUMMARY
Institutional environment
For information on the institutional environment of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), including the legislative obligations of the ABS, financing and governance arrangements, and mechanisms for scrutiny of ABS operations, please see ABS Institutional Environment.
Relevance
This publication presents information about sport and physical recreation in Australian from a variety of ABS data sources. The main users of these data are expected to be government agencies and various community groups with an interest in sport and physical recreation activities. The publication is used to highlight sport and physical recreation data collected by the ABS.
Timeliness
The Sport and Physical Recreation: A Statistical Overview publication is updated as new data becomes available throughout the year with a PDF containing all the updates produced annually.
Accuracy
ABS data included in this publication are subject to non-sampling error and sampling error. Non-sampling errors are inaccuracies that occur because of imperfections in reporting by respondents, and errors made in coding and processing data. These inaccuracies may occur in any enumeration, whether it be a full count or a sample. Every effort is made to reduce non-sampling error by careful design and testing of survey forms and thorough editing and quality control procedures. Sampling error occurs because a sample, rather than the entire population, is surveyed. One measure of the likely difference resulting from not including all dwellings in the survey is given by the standard error. Where applicable measures of the relative standard error are indicated in this publication.
Coherence
This publication is updated on an ongoing basis as new data becomes available. In December a PDF is produced which includes all updates made throughout the year.
Interpretability
A wide variety of ABS data sources are referred to throughout this publication. As the methodology used in each of these surveys may differ, care should be taken when comparing results from these surveys. Where there are inconsistencies or differences between the data collections, these have been highlighted in the text.
Accessibility
Sport and Physical Recreation: A Statistical Overview is accessible through the ABS website and is released as a PDF at the end of each year.
