The agricultural industry has been central to Queensland's economic development since the earliest days of European settlement. It is still an important contributor to the state's economy and has maintained its role as a major export earner.

There were an estimated 28,104 establishments with agricultural activity in Queensland, according to the 2001-02 Agricultural Survey.

The Statistical Division (SD) which recorded the highest number of farm establishments in Queensland at 30 June 2002 was Darling Downs (6,108). This was followed by the Wide Bay-Burnett SD with 5,091.
