NORTHERN TERRITORY
MEDIAN AGE
- At June 2016, the Northern Territory (NT) had a median age (the age at which half the population is older and half is younger) of 32.4 years, which was the lowest median age of all states and territories. The median age of males (32.4 years) was slightly higher than females (32.3).
- The SA2 in the NT with the highest median ages in 2016 was Ross (45.1 years) which is a suburb of Alice Springs, followed by Alligator (41.1) and Fannie Bay - The Gardens (39.3).
- In 2016, Victoria River was the SA2 with the lowest median age (25.2 years) in the NT, followed by Thamarrurr and Gulf (both 25.4 years).

SEX RATIO
- The NT had the highest sex ratio of all states and territories in 2016, with 105.9 males per 100 females.
- Males outnumbered females in both Greater Darwin (109.5 males per 100 females) and the Rest of NT (100.9).
- The SA2 of Howard Springs in the Darwin rural area, had the highest sex ratio in the NT, with 274.7 males per 100 females. This was followed by Darwin City (126.0) and Weddell (125.8).
- The SA2s with the lowest sex ratios were Tanami (88.6 males per 100 females) and Yuendumu - Anmatjere (88.7), both in central Australia.

AGE AND SEX DISTRIBUTION
- Greater Darwin had a lower proportion of its population under 25 years of age at June 2016 (33%, compared with 40% for the rest of the NT) and a higher proportion of people aged 25 years and above (67% compared with 60% for the rest of the NT).
