AGE DISTRIBUTION Children (aged 0-14 years) At 30 June 2005, there were 50,500 children in the Northern Territory, with boys outnumbering girls by 1,600. This age group comprised 24.9% of the Northern Territory population. The Northern Territory had the highest proportion of children of any state or territory, with Queensland the next highest at 20.4%. Daly Statistical Subdivision had the highest proportion of children at 33.9%, while Darwin City Statistical Subdivision had the lowest at 20.5%. Persons aged 15-64 years At 30 June 2005, the proportion of persons aged 15-64 in the Northern Territory was 70.5% (75,500 males and 67,300 females), slightly lower than the Australian Capital Territory (71.2%), which had the highest proportion of all the states and territories. The proportion of this age group for Australia was 67.3%. The highest proportion of persons in this age group was in Darwin City Statistical Subdivision (73.9%), followed by Litchfield Shire Statistical Subdivision (73.1%). The Statistical Local Areas in the Northern Territory where this age group was proportionally highest were East Arm (94.8%) (which includes a correctional centre and a juvenile detention centre) and Litchfield (S) - Pt A (88.9%) (which includes the Australian Army's Robertson Barracks). Persons aged 65 years and over In contrast to the preceding age groups, the Northern Territory had the lowest proportion of persons aged 65 years and over of all the states and territories at 4.6% of the total Northern Territory population. Nationally, this proportion was 13.1%. The Statistical Subdivision with the highest proportion of persons aged 65 years and over was Finniss (8.9%) and the lowest was East Arnhem (2.4%). The Statistical Local Areas of The Gardens (13.3%) (which includes a nursing home), Narrows (11.9%), and Lee Point-Leanyer Swamp (11.3%) had the highest proportion of persons aged 65 years and over in Darwin City Statistical Subdivision. POPULATION DISTRIBUTION BY AGE AND SEX, Northern Territory and Australia - 30 June 2005 MEDIAN AGE The median age, the age at which half the population is older and half is younger, increased in the Northern Territory from 30.6 years at 30 June 2004 to 30.9 years at 30 June 2005. The male median age in the Northern Territory was 31.1 years and the female median age was slightly lower at 30.6 years. The Northern Territory continues to have the lowest median age of all states and territories with the median age of the total Australian population being 36.6 years. In the Northern Territory, the highest median ages were in Finniss Statistical Subdivision at 38.5 years (40.1 for males and 37.1 for females) and Litchfield Shire Statistical Subdivision at 35.1 years (35.0 for males and 35.3 for females). The lowest median age was in the Daly Statistical Subdivision at 24.0 years (24.1 for males and 23.9 for females). SEX RATIO The sex ratio is the number of males per one hundred females. A sex ratio less than 100 indicates that there are fewer males than females. At 30 June 2005, the sex ratio for the Northern Territory was 111.0 males per 100 females compared to the national ratio of 99.0 males per 100 females. The Northern Territory had the highest sex ratio of all the states and territories, followed by Western Australia with 100.5 males per 100 females. In the Northern Territory there were more males than females across all age groups (0-4 to 65 and over), with the highest (131.0) being recorded for the age group 60-64 years. SEX RATIO BY AGE GROUP, Northern Territory and Australia - 30 June 2005 All Statistical Subdivisions within the Northern Territory had more males than females, with the highest sex ratio recorded in Litchfield Shire (127.4) and the lowest in Bathurst-Melville (103.9). The Statistical Local Areas with the highest sex ratios were East Arm (which includes a correctional centre and a juvenile detention centre) with 1,016.3 males per 100 females and Litchfield (S) - Pt A (which includes the Australian Army's Robertson Barracks) with 342.1 males per 100 females. Within the Darwin City Statistical Subdivision, the Statistical Local Areas of Winnellie (167.1) and Parap and City - Inner (both 142.4) had the highest sex ratios, while Coconut Grove (101.1), Brinkin (100.7) and Lee Point-Leanyer Swamp (89.3) had the lowest. For people in the 15-64 'working age' group, the highest ratio of males to females was in the Statistical Subdivision of Litchfield Shire (133.7) while the lowest occurred in Daly (105.0). DEPENDENCY RATIO The dependency ratio is the number of children (0-14 years) and aged persons (65 years and over) per 100 persons aged 15-64 years. A reduced value for the dependency ratio indicates that there is a larger population of working age to support the population of non-working age. The dependency ratio for the Northern Territory at 30 June 2005 was 41.9, compared to 48.6 nationally. The Northern Territory continued to have the second lowest dependency ratio of all the states and territories followed by the Australian Capital Territory (40.5) with the lowest. The Statistical Subdivisions with the highest dependency ratio were Daly (63.6) and East Arnhem (50.7), while the lowest were in Litchfield Shire (36.7) and Darwin City (35.3).
