CHANGES TO THE SURVEY OF TOURIST ACCOMMODATION
This information paper details forthcoming changes to the ongoing ABS Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA).
Change in collection frequency: quarterly to annual
The June quarter 2013 STA data release on 26 September 2013 was the last quarterly data collection and release activity for the Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). From 1 July 2013 the collection frequency of the STA moved from quarterly to annual, on a financial year basis. The next release of STA data will be on 19 December 2014 and will include the four quarters of the 2013-14 financial year, that is September quarter 2013, December quarter 2013, March quarter 2014 and June quarter 2014.
Change in data items
In moving to annual data collection, the data items of 'guest nights available' and 'room nights available' which were previously available on a consultancy only basis will be incorporated into the annual STA release.
The collection of 'persons employed' and 'guest arrivals' data will cease. This will result in the three data items of 'persons employed', 'guest arrivals' and 'average length of stay' (as guest arrivals are required to derive this item) no longer being available from the STA and therefore not included in future releases. Alternate data sources which can be used as a substitute for the discontinued data items are listed in the table below. Please note in all cases these data sources can be used as reliable indicators, but are not directly comparable due to differences in scope. Please refer to the explanatory information associated with the alternate publication sources for scope details.

Reduction in the number of catalogue numbers
The annual STA data release will incorporate the current ten separate product releases into one release. All data from the STA will be accessible through

The annual release will continue to contain monthly and quarterly data by type of establishment and star rating. Data will continue to be available for each state/territory and Australia, and by Tourism Region and Statistical Area Level 2.
