Businesses that contribute to the statistics in this publication are classified to Division F: Wholesale trade and Division G: Retail trade, in accordance with theAustralian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 edition (cat. no. 1292.0).
Retail businesses are classified to:

At end of June 2013 there were 1,271,957 persons working in Retail Industry. Over half (53.9% or 685,883) were employed in Other store-based retailing.
Total wages and salaries paid by the Retail Industry during 2012–13 was $40.4b.
Retail businesses generated $380.1b in total income and incurred $363.4b in total expenses.
Operating profit before tax (OPBT) for the Retail Industry was $18.3b.Food retailing andOther store-based retailing accounted for 76.5% of total Retail Industry OPBT.
Industry value added (IVA) by Retail businesses was $69.7b which represented 7% of Australian industry value added for 2012–13.

At end of June 2013 there were 553,730 persons working in Wholesale Industry. Over half (54.6% or 302,390 persons) were employed in Machinery and equipment wholesalingandOther goods wholesaling.
Total wages and salaries paid by the WholesaleIndustry during 2012–13 was $34.7b. Almost 40% (or $13.6b) of total wages were paid by Machinery and equipment wholesaling.
Wholesale businesses generated $493.1b in total income and incurred $477.3b in total expenses.
Operating profit before tax (OPBT) for the WholesaleIndustry was $18.1b. Machinery and equipment wholesaling and Other goods wholesaling accounted for almost half (49.1% or $8.9b) of total Wholesale Industry OPBT.
Industry value added (IVA) by Wholesale businesses was $63.3b which represented 6.3% of Australian industry value added for 2012–13.
