MEDIA RELEASE
ABS calls for public comment on issue of remote Australia The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has announced plans to introduce a classification of remoteness to enable decision makers to gain ready access to statistics about people living in remote parts of Australia. The ABS today released an information paper on the proposals and invited public comment. The new standard Classification of Remoteness is to be incorporated into the ABS Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC). The ABS proposes adopting five classes of remoteness into the standard classification and these will be used for statistical output from 1 July 2001, including data from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing. The classes are: Highly Accessible (which will include areas such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane), Accessible, Moderately Accessible, Remote, and Very Remote. "Very Remote" will apply to areas which are quite distant from a range of services. The publication released today, Information Paper: ABS Views on Remoteness (cat. no. 1244.0), details the proposed classification and invites comments from potential users of the remoteness classification and other interested parties. Responses to the information paper should be emailed to geography@abs.gov.au before 28 February 2001. Any responses received will be considered before the proposed classification is finalised in July 2001. People wishing to find out more about the proposal can access the information paper on this site. Document Selection These documents will be presented in a new window.
